Dark Knight [Jul. 18th, 2008|03:44 am]
Third row in a cheap theater with tiny seats. I'm going to be in so much pain tomorrow, but it was so worth it.

I suppose I should update [Jul. 5th, 2008|07:06 am]
I am now officially 30 years and one month old. My awesome girlfriend threw me a surprise party. It was boob-themed. I may be an ass man, but who am I to look a gift boob in the nipple. Someone has a picture of me licking the icing off the nipple of the boobcake. It may be on flickr.

Training at io has been going well. I feel I've grown as an actor and a person. Improv is like continuously stepping off a cliff. And you have to make your own landing space. It's scary and exhilerating and amazing. I'm still ten months away from finishing the program, and then I might go to Second City. I don't think I'll be the next Chris Farley but I'll be happy with anything that allows me to be creative and maybe earn some money.

There's some other stuff that I might think of later.

Speaking of birthdays, [info]randomblur's was on Tuesday. I think I did right by her, if her immediate reaction was any indication. Then I told her to be prepared to be disappointed for every birthday for the rest of her life, because I don't think I can top that shit.

(She told me she wrote an entry about it, I haven't seen it. Whatevs)

Hey look: a totally useless update. [May. 26th, 2008|03:05 am]
I've had this Super Soaker rolling around in the trunk of my car(s) for like, ten years. Today I finally had an opportunity to use it. Turns out that being exposed to the elements for a decade is not good for a high-powered water cannon. It leaked like Bob Dole. Oh well, It's going to a better place now (assuming that it was made of a recyclable plastic like HDPE.

At any rate, happy birthday [info]jazzgod1.

Well it turns out my new bike wasn't so sweet after all. The chain snapped as I was riding home today. Fortunately I was a couple blocks from a shop. The mechanic took one look at it and told me I had a lemon, and that he'd been seeing a lot of bad bikes coming from Working Bikes lately. So here's a tip for my Chicago peeps: Don't go to Working Bikes.

I Want to Ride my Bicycle [Apr. 10th, 2008|06:47 pm]
Oh hay.

This past Saturday was really stinkin' nice outside, so [info]randomblur and I went down to Working Bikes Co-Op. It being the first nice Saturday of the year, the place was a clusterfuck when we got there, but once the dust settled we found ourselves some sweet new rides. She got a cute little cruiser that folds for easy storage, and I got a sweet 15 speed Raleigh to replace my old-ass Schwinn Frontier, which I then donated back to the Co-Op.  She was a good bike, and served me long and well, but fuck she was she a slow bike.

Problem is we haven't had a chance to go riding yet. Once we got home we (meaning she) decided that we (meaning me) should re-tetrisize the back porch. Then later some stuff happened, and now the weather is crap again. *Shakes fist at sky*

I'm playing Bully on the Wii. They did a real good job adapting the controls for the motion sensors. Why mash buttons when you can actually punch people?

I thought I'd made a post about the improv classes that Id started taking, but it must have gotten eaten. Yeah so anyway I've started taking improv classes at the iO.  I'm three weeks in so far. I'm learning to stop being so self-conscious. I think I read somewhere that doing improv is like continuously stepping off a cliff, and that's pretty accurate. I've always felt most comfortable unleashing my sense of humor around friends (those people who "get" me). My sense of humor is a little odd and I'm more used to getting strange looks rather than laughs. One of my classmates said something encouraging to me during a break. Last week I initiated a scene where I discovered a dead body in the woods. The teacher didn't like how I did it at first so he told me to start over and "really sell it this time", so I did an over the top hysteric, which is not really my style. My classmate told me he thought the teacher was full of crap for that because my original deadpan was much better, so that was nice.

So taking these classes is all about losing my fear I guess. Not a bad thing to do, really.

"Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on religion, favorite type of underwear, etc."

Here's the thing about biofuels: they're really not that eco-friendly.

1) Economics 101, Supply and Demand: If they're coming from a plant that humans regularly eat, like corn, they are almost literally taking food from our mouths. As demand for corn as food and fuel increases, so does the price. Farmers see the increased profitability of corn and react accordingly, at the expense of the production of other crops, raising the prices of those crops accordingly. Even non-edible sources such as switchgrass come into play, as the cultivation of something that was once considered a weed takes over the field that once provided your tofu steaks.

2) E85 is fucking terrible w/r/t efficiency and co2 emissions: Flex-fuel engines don't burn ethanol as efficiently as they do pure gasoline. Hopefully engineering can overcome that. The problem is that ethanol is still a hydrocarbon just like gasoline. Even if the US finds a way to fuel its cars without buying fuel from the Middle-East or South America, we're still pumping co2 into the atmosphere.

This post brought to you buy a guy who owns an old Chevy and an even older Caddy with a combined piston count of sixteen, a combined length of 40 feet, and a combined weight of 5.5 tons. I drive about fifty miles a week, what's your excuse?

Apparently corn is regularly available in February, as I was able to procure some to make elotes on Sunday night. Now as to what that crazy street vendor was doing out on a chilly February evening well, we'll leave that up for debate.

It boggles my mind that produce can be flown, (flown!) from one continent to another to be sold for reasonable prices. I know the green crowd is pushing people to buy local, but if the price of fuel continues to increase, this wacky produce importation will quickly come to an end. Buying local will be your only option.

By the way, it's been a while since the last time I bought corn. I got it for fifty cents an ear. What's the normal price during the summer, when it comes from Du Page County instead of Fuckall, Brazil? And what was the price before some idiot decided it would be a good idea to use a staple crop as a gasoline substitute?

My flatmate is watching this show on the Travel Channel about the world's most unique fast food restaurants, including a Subway inside the Pentagon. They're interviewing the manager about hiring practices. He says, "We looking for any number of crimes, including burglary, murder, double murder, shoplifting..."

I can't come up with a decent joke about that.

The people (or four of them, at least) have spoken. I'm taking improv classes.

Hey guess what! I'm working out of an office today! I get to internet!

Saw Marilyn Manson last night. I wasn't too interested in going at first; I skipped the concert last fall because I'm not crazy about the new album. That and I didn't feel like putting up with Slayer fans, as much as I like Slayer too. But The Woman hadn't ever seen them, so I agreed to take her. Then I found out that Twiggy was back in the band and they'd be playing more older material, and I suddenly got more excited about going. Suffice to say, that shit did not dissappoint. I banged my head, threw the horns (or the finger, depending on the song) and shouted along like I was 17 again. Now my throat and neck are sore and I'm still partially deaf. Awesome.

Before the band came on I got to give Gil my personal tour of the Brawlroom: "That balcony's where my friends and I were practically melting when we came to see Cake And The Flaming Lips in the middle of August and it was 120 degrees in here. There's the staircase where my girlfriend at the time nearly passed out after getting crushed in the SOAD pit. Here's the pillar I had to lean against at that Beck show where I learned I don't much care for smoking pot." Ah memories.

W is here. Downtown is a clusterfuck. Some random ped-xing was blocked
for no apparent reason and a cop was telling me to go the long way
around the intersection. "That's fucking stupid" I said, so I walked
halfway down the block and jay-walked.

Fight the power.
